Marty Casey is "Bristol County (BCL) Sportsman of the Year"
By Open Season September 20, 2009 12:00 AM Marty Casey of New Bedford was named Sportsman of the Year by the Bristol County League of Sportsmen's Clubs (BCL) at the league's annual banquet last weekend for his intense commitment to the promotion and the safeguarding of the shooting sports for most of his life. Casey had been nominated by the Rod and Gun Club of New Bedford, where he's been a member for 30 years and has been chairman of the club's indoor air pistol league for just as long. He's served on the club's board of directors for 12 years, is a graduate of the National Range Officer Institute as a Chief Range Officer, a certified firearms instructor, training counselor for the Junior Rifle Club, marksmanship instructor for the Boy Scouts of America and is also a former instructor for the Mass. Hunter Education Bureau. A major supporter of shooting fraternities and organizations, he's an NRA endowment member, GOAL sustaining member, National Muzzleloading Rifle Association life member, a life member of his club and also a charter member of the Copicut Rifle Association, where he's a member of that club's rifle team and competes at the national matches at Camp Perry, Ohio. This year, Casey won a silver medal in the Vintage Rifle and bronze medals in both the M1 Garand and 03 Springfield Matches at the nationals. He also holds the NRA Distinguished Expert titles in bull's eye pistol, action pistol and light rifle. Casey has run shooting competitions and promoted the shooting sports at area clubs throughout Southeastern Mass. for more than three decades. He's not only served as a match chairman and instructor, but he's also been a mentor and role model for many area shooters. Kurt Palmer, a national high-power rifle champion and national record holder was one of the Rod and Gun Club members who recommended that Casey be nominated for this prestigious award. "Long before I was old enough to drive, Marty would travel out of his way to pick me up at home and take me with him to area shooting matches of all kinds and supply me with whatever was needed to get me involved," said Palmer. "Marty has steadily assisted young people and newcomers for as long as I've known him. He's relentless in his dedication to promoting the sport and makes a profound impression on all around him." Casey, a mountain of man, also made a profound impression on this columnist. When I took the Hunter Safety Course at age 14, Marty was an instructor and when he walked into the room, the floor shook underfoot, his presence and thunderous voice commanding attention. As an instructor, his good natured manner, knowledge and experience left an lasting impression on me. A few years later, I bought my first deer rifle. The day after I bought that used Remington 742, Marty was running a high-power rifle shoot at the Rod and Gun Club. I took my new used rifle, but had no ammunition. Marty gave me a box of shells, coached me on the finer points of high-power rifle shooting and I won second place in the open sight class — my first trophy — and I was hooked on rifle competition. "Marty is a treasured asset of the Rod and Gun Club of New Bedford and of the shooting sports in general," said Palmer. "Any time I shoot a good target, I know it's because of the sound fundamentals instilled by him — and I hope he's watching." Aside of his mountainous physical appearance, when it comes to the shooting sports, there's nobody bigger than Marty Casey.
More Camp Perry News '09 CRA Shooters Take Home Medals By The Copicut Rifle Association of Dartmouth once again put Southeastern Mass. on the map at the National Rifle Matches and the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) events held recently at Camp Perry, Ohio. Ten members of the club traveled 16 hours to compete in the matches and Kurt Palmer of Westport won the gold medal in the As-Issued M1 Garand Match, also setting a new national record for that category with a 293 - 6X. Palmer also won a gold medal in the National Trophy Individual Match, a gold in the 03 Springfield Matches, a silver in the Vintage Rifle Matches, a silver in the Excellence in Competition Match and a bronze in the Carbine Matches. Marty Casey of New Bedford won a silver medal in the Vintage Rifle and bronze medals in both the M1 Garand and 03 Springfield Matches. George Tripp of Somerset won a bronze in the M1 Garand matches and his son, George Jr., also of Somerset, also took bronze medals in the M1 Garand and 03 Springfield matches. Joe Biszko of Assonet won bronze in both the M1 Garand and the Vintage Rifle matches and his son, Marc, also of Assonet, took bronze medals in the M1 Garand, 03 Springfield and the Carbine matches. John Beaumont of New Bedford won a gold in the M1 Garand matches and bronze in the National Trophy Individual and the Coastal Artillery Trophy matches. Russ Sylvia of Dartmouth took a bronze in the M1 Garand matches, and Ray Raposa of Westport won a silver in the NRA Off-Hand Rifle and a bronze in the M1 Garand matches. And Frank Sciotto of Westport won bronze medals in the Carbine, Vintage Rifle and M1 Garand matches. Congrats to our local competitors. Kurt Palmer, 39, of Westport, Massachusetts, placed first in the As-Issued Garand match with an aggregate score of 293-6X and was presented with the John C. Garand trophy. Palmer edged Clinton Greenwood, 49, of Tomball, Texas who shot a 291-10X for second place and U.S. Navy Aviation Technician AT1(AW) Keith Bowen, 30, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, who placed third with an aggregate of 290-8X.
